Ignite Architects is pleased to announce the appointment of Jimmy Zhuang as Associate – Urban Design Leader. He will hold a key role in leading Ignite’s master planning and urban design projects.
Jimmy has extensive expertise amassed through an array of urban design projects, based largely in Auckland and Hamilton. This includes different scales of land development including master planning projects, multi-storey building design, planning policy development, regional and area spatial planning, along with planning application reviews and approval.
Prior to joining Ignite Architects, he designed and coordinated the master planning of several large-scale greenfield and brownfield development projects. Many of those master plans evolved from the early concept design stage to the construction stage.
During his tenure at Auckland Council as a policy planner, he was involved in significant projects such as the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan, area/spatial plans, district-plan changes, along with providing planning policy advice.
“Ignite has a long and successful history of delivering in the urban realm locally and internationally,” said Michael Bilsborough, Director at Ignite Architects. “It is exciting to strengthen our master planning and urban design capability with the arrival of Jimmy, who brings a wealth of experience from both the public and private sector.”
Jimmy believes components of the new Auckland Unitary Plan present some compelling opportunities for the urban design profession. This includes the encouragement of smaller section sizes to cope with population growth, and support for a move away from the necessity of detached housing. These provide an ideal opportunity to slow the ‘urban sprawl’.
Jimmy holds a Bachelor of Planning (with Honours) and Masters in Urban Design (with Honours) from the University of Auckland.
