An architect should be both a translator and a steward of their client’s needs and their community’s values. Good design is the successful translation of these, encompassing the aesthetic, functional, and financial goals of the client and community - not the ambitions of the designer.
The true power of architecture lies in the memories people create in and around it. The architect’s responsibility is to take an objective approach to understanding how these memories are formed, and how design can enable a sense of familiarity and nostalgia in new spaces. Architecture should therefore be regional, not universal.
